Before you depart, set the phone up at home. Buy the Departing plan, install it on Wi-Fi, and turn it on when you land.
Check the phone
It needs an eSim, and it must not be locked to one carrier. An iPhone 8 or a Galaxy S10 cannot install one. An iPhone 13 or later, a Galaxy S24, or a Pixel 8 can.
